Differentiation is important to any learning situation. In the gym, my players begin the season with different strengths and weaknesses. In an effort to produce the most well-rounded, hard-to-guard players, I identify and target specific skills that need improvement. The identification of strengths and weaknesses occurs in early season practices, with drills that cover all the skills our team will need to be successful (formative assessments). Players then participate in drills that address their specific weaknesses (differentiation).
In the classroom, the principle is the same. Students arrive at varying levels of readiness and skill acquisition. The first quarter is spent identifying students' strengths and weaknesses. Classes are then designed to help students achieve skill mastery through targeted practice.

Formative assessments for Unit 1 involved brief analysis questions of readings done in class and at home. These assessments led to identification of students who were struggling with analysis and small group work to address the causes (carelessness with the gathering of evidence, difficulty with identifying cause and effect, etc.). This small group work occurred during future classes or call-back.
